Sciatica is a term used to describe nerve pain in the leg that is caused by a problem in the lower back. The pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness that come with sciatica can be a source of constant frustration and diminished quality of life. Many people complain of lower back pain and pins and needles sensations in their legs, but are unaware that they are suffering from sciatic nerve pain.
Sciatica typically only affects one side of the body. Patients will experience leg symptoms in one leg with more intense lower back pain on the same side of the body.
The causes of sciatica are numerous. Many people associate sciatica with the aging process, but a weakening of the body is only one possible cause. Pregnancy, disc herniation, excess weight, can all cause sciatica.
