Suffering From Golfer’s Elbow

The following is a transcript of a conversation we had with our friend Gerry about his chronic Golfer’s Elbow:

Booklet to explain all aspects of Golfer's Elbow and how to recover
Golfer's Elbow - Information Booklet

I am the classic 16 handicap golfer. Well, I think I’m better than that…. but, I rock up to the club 3 minutes before tee time. Then I rush to the 1st tee box, apologise for being late, mention the traffic or something, take out my driver and launch my first stroke of the day deep into the nearest hedge. Check my back-swing then hit the provisional straight down the fairway 250 yards. Perfect.

I take the jibes/insults  from my playing inferiors and then continue to shoot 96. Get back in my car wondering why it went so wrong after shooting 85 the previous week. No practice since the previous outing of course, but somehow I feel the Professional Tour awaits if I could just sort out my driver, iron play and putting. Maybe I should get a new  foursome?

But now I have an excuse. I’ve had a sore elbow on and off for 3 years now. Sometimes it gets really bad on the inside of my elbow, and then it goes away. But always comes back. It drives me crazy. The pain starts from the inside of my elbow and trickles down towards my wrist and little finger. When it gets really bad, I sometimes get pins and needles into my wrist and little finger. I sometimes take painkillers to deal with my dreaded Golfer’s elbow!

I’d like to say it’s from too many hours on the golf course or hitting too many buckets of golf balls at the range but no. One round of golf a week won’t do it. Im a mechanic. It’s a physical job.  There’s a lot of gripping and twisting of the forearm and wrist.

What is Golfer’s Elbow?

It starts as pain and tenderness, usually on the INSIDE of my elbow (Tennis elbow is the OUTSIDE!). the pain sometimes extended along the inner side of the forearm. My elbow can feel stiff, and making a fist might hurt. There is sometimes even weakness in the hands and wrists. Numbness and tingling sensations that can radiate into one or more fingers — usually the ring and little finger.

Working as a mechanic is very repetitive and can cause repetitive strain injury. We see this condition develop A LOT in people with manual jobs – not many sports people! They should have called it “Mechanic’s Elbow”!

In our research we found another great golfer, one Tiger Woods suffered a similar injury in 2013. We suspect this was from the golf and not changing gear boxes. He overcame it and went on to win some important tournaments!

Tiger developed pain in the medial (inner) aspect of his elbow earlier this summer.  This injury is commonly known as golfer’s elbow, or medial epicondylitis.

How To Treat Golfer’s Elbow?

The consensus among professionals seems to be to stop looking for the quick fix and rehabilitate the injury. Gerry needs to stop treating the symptoms and address the root cause of the problem.

Our Golfer’s Elbow Pain Kit is a treatment plan specific to golfers elbow with the necessary tools to carry out the plan.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What Causes A Sore Elbow?

The most frequent cause of elbow pain that occurs without trauma, is swelling and inflammation of the two main tendons in the elbow. Pain on The Inside of your elbow is Golfer’s Elbow, and Pain on The Outside is Tennis Elbow. Both benefit from using a brace to restrict range of movement and a specific rehab plan you can do yourself.

Is Golfer's Elbow Tendonitis?

Yes, it is a form of tendonitis affecting the inside of your elbow. Once you have had a diagnosis it can benefit greatly from some rest to allow the inflammation to go down. After that you can work on rehab so the injury doesn’t come back, with actions like:

  • Brace / Support
  • Heat Therapy
  • Massage
  • Movement Exercises
  • Stretches
  • Strength Exercises
  • Cold Therapy
Is Elbow Pain Ever Serious?

It’s not normally serious, but if the pain doesn’t go away, or is accompanied by an intense swelling, redness and pain in your arm, you should definitely seek medical attention for this. You can feel if you actually have tendinitis by feeling the tendons inside your elbow, but it’s best to get a proper diagnosis from a trained medical professional.

Can You Get An Elbow Replacement?

Yes, it’s caused Elbow Athroplasty. It’s not as common as it’s cousins the Knee Replacement, or the Hip Replacement, and only a trained medical professional can refer you for an operation such as this. Before taking this
